Cast Vegetables

These cast glass vegetables are made from real vegetables using method similar to the last wax casting process. Anne calls it "The Lost Vegetable Process".

Plaster of paris is poured into a mould surronding the vegetable so that it is completely enclosed.

After the a plaster of paris has set the mould is heated in a kiln until the vegatable burns away. Then the ash is carefully removed.

A lump of cold recycled Dartington crystal glass is positioned above the plaster mould and this is then returned to the kiln. As the temperature rises, a stream of molten glass pours into the mould.

After cooling this can be broken open to reveal the glass vegetable. The "vegetable" is then claened and sent to specialist finishers for polishing.

The result is a unique tactile reincarnation of the vegetable in glass as you can see here.
